REGISTRATION OF LAND AGENTS
BILL READ A SECOND TIME

In the House this afternoon Mr G. Witty moved the second reading of the Land Agents Registration Bill. . ~ . , , , The measure, he said, was intended, to safeguard people. A land agent was in no way responsible as was any auctioneer. , , ~ ~ The Bill proceeded that after the first day of January next no person shall carry on the business of land agent unless he is the holder of a license under the Act. It would besufficient if anv one member of a nrm was the holder of the license. _ .Licenses would be issued by a magistrate upon bis becoming satisfied that the applicant was a fit person to hold the expla ; net ] qhat the Bill was practically the same as that introduced last year. Every land agent was liable to two years imprisonment for wrongful conversion of monies received or for rendering a fraudulent account of monies received A person carrying on business without a license would be liable to a fine of £SO. The Bill was supported by Messrs Payne, Harris, Buddo, Mander and Russell. Mr Massey suggested that the mover should refer the Bill to the Lands Committee, and this course was adopted, and the Bilkjwas read a second time.
