A GLIMPSE OF FAIRYLAND

THE MILITARY BALL-

A BRILLIANT SCENE AT THE

GARRISON HALL.

MANY BEAUTIFUL CONFECTIONS

The Garrison ball at the Garrison Hall last evening was attended by tbo largest gathering which lias ever'been seen at a similar function in Gisborne, -unitary dances have always proved extremely popular locally, ‘and there can be no question but that the establishment of tlie Territorial scheme caused a greater number to lie interested in the function this year. From 7.5 U o’clock the guests commenced to stream into the iarge building, untd by 8 o’clock there must have been, fully BUO people present. The ball was opened with the grand march, in which over 250 couples took part. The scene presented was a most brilliant one, the uniforms of the many officers and members of the different local corps, lending a pleasing touch of color. Ihe hail was transformed into a veritable fairyland, with streamers of flags and bunting, while the. many rich and beautiful gowns worn by the ladies made a scene that was fair to look upon.

Ibe Grand March was led off by Major Beers and Mrs Bishop, vho were followed by Major Evans and Mrs Wilson, Captain Skelley and Mrs Dowman, Captain Hamilton and 3diss Dowmau, Lieut. Poynter and Mrs Gumming, Surgeon-Captain Williams and Mrs Williams, Lieut. Mitchell and Mrs Spragg, and Captain Pasco-, and, Mrs Traill, these forming the official set in the Lancers, which followed the Grand March.

The following programme was then gone through to excellent music supplied by the Gisborne City Band, under the conductor ship of Mr W. Harris :- - Grand March; Lancers.. “Port-sea”; Waltz, “Woodland Blossoms”: polka, “Senta”; schottisehe, “Adelina”; Lancers. ‘‘Royal Navy”; waltz, “Vision of Salome”; mazurka, “Clarice”: d’Alberts, “Rochdale”;

waltz. “Woodland Whispers”: Lancers, “Royal Irish”; waltz, “Donauwellen”; schottisehe, “Highland Gems” : waltz, “Come Back to Erin”; barn dance, “On the Old Plantation” , d’Alberts, “Good Shot”: waltz, “London”; quadrille, “Vendetta.” General satisfaction was expressed at tho excellence of the music supplied by the City Band. Four extras were danced during supper, Messrs Rerwick Bros’ orchestra supplying mus'o whic-h left nothing to !>e desired. The matter of supplying supper for such a largo crowd appeared a formidable undertaking, but to Mr S. Woo> ton, who had the catering arrange meats in hand, and his well-traine * staff, it- was a light task, and, everyone hand their wants expeditiously attended to in a manner, whic-h gave' the most entire satisfaction. 1 he large committee, which had z'.o arrangements in hand, deserve great credit for the very complete mahnor in which they had carried out their duties. The elaborate decoratior.F must have taken considerable time, while the excellent state of the flocr bore ample testimony to the fact thrt a great deal of work must- have beerexpended upon its preparation. The general verdict was that t: o ball was one of tbe best-managed ax I most enjovable functions which her been held locally for many years, and everyone departed at an early ho}-, this morning highly delighted with ii'.o pleasure which had been afforded by tlie first Garrison Ball under Terr -- torial regime.
