MOTU. (From Oni Own Correspondent.) MOTU, July 29. The hatehelors of the district gave their annual ball on Friday last, which was as big a success as in former years. The hall was prettily decorated with ferns, etc., for the- occasion, and Air Ollev. on behalf of the bachelors welcomed the visitors. About 30 couples danced to the splendid, music supplied by Alt* Cremlall, of Gisborne, which was a good attendance considering tho state of the roads. Two songs contributed by Air Greiulali were highly anprsciated, and the bachelors may feel well satisfied with their efforts to make the evening a success. Dancing was kept up until an early hour on Saturday morning, everybody thoroughly enjoying themselves. At a meeting of the Settlors’ Asociation, which was held on Saturday night last, Air. G. O’Donovan presided over a good attendance of members. It. was fhvndrd to write to the Commissioner of Crown Lands, urging him to have 230 acres of bush opened ui> -Ur settlement in the near vicinity of Tie township. Aftei considerable discussion ir was decided to pay a proportion towards the salary of the district nurse, who is to be stationed at Mntawai. Another meeting will be bold on Saturday, the lt)th prox., as there are several more important nuestions to be brought up before the Association. After the usual vote of thanks to the chair, the meeting terminated.

The Government are putting more men on the widening of the AlotuOnotiki road, and it is hoped that this will be pushed on with all speed in tho interests of the district generally.
