CADETS’ TRIP TO CANADA.
ONLY* FOURTEEN TO COTO BE SELECTED BY MERIT. By Telegraph—Special Correspondent. WELLINGTON, July 1. When the- —Canadian Government some time ago invited a visit from a Contingent of New Zealand cadets it was understood locally that 20 boys were invited. After tlie cadets had been selected it transpired that a mistake had been made and. that the Canadian Government desired the contingent to consist of only 14 members. A cable was sent to Canada by the defence authorities with a y.iew to clearing, up the point this afternoon. The Hon. A. M- Myers (Minister of Defence) informed a reporter that a reply had been received from the Canadian Government and that it desired the New Zealand cadet contingent to consist of fourteen members. The 20 cadets selected are now undergoing a course of instruction at Trentham, but six of their number will have to abandon the projected trip. The Minister states that the Government considered it the proper thing to stick to the terms of the invitation from Canada. _ Major General Gcdley was interviewed on til© subject this evening. Hp stated the cadets had been informed that six of their number would have to stay in New Zealand. Asked how the selection would be made General G-odley replied that proficiency in rifle shooting would be regarded- as a Recommendation when tlie selection was being made. It would be no use sending to Canada any except the best shots. General smartness and efficiency would also be taken into account and another thing to be considered would be physical fitness and good health.
