HAASE SENTENCED
(Received June 30. 5.5 p.m.) ST. PETERSBURG, June 30. Haase, the German spy, has been sentenced to two years’ penal servitude at Odessa for photographing military bridges at St. Petersburg, Warsaw’, and various places on tlie frontier in 1911. .

' During tho debate on the second reading the Army Estimates in the German Reichstag, Dr. Trendel, Centre, declared England had organised espionage -on a large scale in Germany, and that everything must be done to tear aside .the netw'ork of espionage that surrounded, them. Their coasts and land frontiers-.qught to be protected by the heaviest punishments against espionage. Extensive preventive measures had been taken in foreign countries. England had severe- penalties' for certain cases of espionage—viz., penal -servitude. Tlie German fortress imprisonment did not deter foreigners from espionage. Tlie lenient practice of the German Imperial Courts of Justice was untenable.
