KING’S ROAD OR MAKARAKA.
THE JUNCTION SITE FINALLY SETTLED.
MAKARAKA ROUTE ADOPTED
To Mr. C. E. Armstrong (District Engineer) came word on Saturday that upon reconsideration the Government had decided to revert to Makaraka instead of King’s Road as the site of the junction of the Motu line with the Napier line. It appears that in view of the reopening of the vexed question work at King’s Road was discontinued, about a mile of light formation woi'k having been completed. Between Patutahi and Ngatapa about four miles of construction work has already been completed What is now intended is that upon the return of Mr. Thorpe the pegging out of the permanent route from Makaraka will be begun'As far as can be ascertained the exact point of junction was never settled, but- we are authoritatively informed that it will be just a little beyond the present station at Makaraka. The settled route will go from Makaraka straight to the river crossing, and then hear towards the Domain, and then follow the road to the site fixed for the station at Patutahi. There are at present about 90 m: n employed on the works.
