An important subscription dance and a private one are to be given next week. Few people know that the blue and white uniform of the British Navy owes its origin to a Duchess of Bedford. George 11. once met the duchess cut riding, and he was so pleased with her blue and white ha-bin that he ordered these colors to be used for naval uniforms. Before this there was no official costume for naval men of the lower ratings. The black silk scarf worn under tlie collar by bluejackets is, as everyone' knows, a token of mourning for the death of Nelson, and the three narrow stripes of white braid round the edges of his cellar commemorate the battles of Trafalgar, the Nile, and St. Vincent.

It was a happy thought of Mrs A. -J. —mderson’s to entertain a number of friends at practice of the two-step on Tuesday evening last. Dancing took place cn the verandah, and was most thoroughly enjoyed by all. Supper was set in the dining-room, ana the table was daintily decorated with jonquils and snow-dreps and large silver candle-sticks with their lighted candles were also placed here and there on tile table. Mrs Henderson, always a, charming hostess, wore a cream embroidered frock over which was worn a pretty geranium colored cloak. Some of the guests present, were Mesdames AY. The concert given in aid of the Holy Trinity Church building fund, in Trinity Hall on Wednesday evening, was even more enjoyable than the last. The vocalists were all well received, but the items most appreciated were the duets by Messrs Brown and Nelson, the latter being the possessor of a very good tenor voice. Mrs Henderson’s items were particularly pleasing. Mr. G. Kells surprised everyone by his powerful voice, and will always be in favor with an audience. Mr. T. Wells has a ibeatuiful baritone voice and uses at with great regard to-expresison. Among the audience were: Mesdames Field, • Davies, Smith, Murray, Callis, Traill, George, Brown, Gully, Misses Bull, de Lautour, Murray, Evans, Falkner, King, Jamieson, Davies, Black and N. Davies.
