A POPULAR CHRISTCHURCH HOTEL

EMPIRE HOTEL IMPROVEMENTS. That well-known and centrally-situ-ated house, the Empire Hotel, High Street, lias, says the “Christchurch Press,” been, taken over by Air. J. P. Murphy, recently of Tologa Bay, who has decided to! make it one of the most comfortable and up-to-date hotels in Christchurch. It is Air Alurphy’s intention to make the Empire Hotel a residential house ,of the highest class, replete with all modern conveniences. In realisation of this lie has just had the premises renovated from cellar to ceiling, and put in a thorough state of repair. A reporter, who went over the house, was greatly impressed with the improvements effected. All the bedroams have been re-papered in appropriate colours, and have been completely re-furnished. They present a cosy, comfortable, and home-like appearance, and are lofty, airy, and bright. On the different floors there a,rtf several sit-ting-rooms for the use of boarders, and these have, also been thoroughly renovated and appropriately furnished. The billiard-room, the private bar adjoining, and the smoking room on the first floor also show the effects of the scheme of improvement inaugurated by Air. Alurphv. The dining-room is a, bright and cheerful apartment, artistically furnished. The kitchen was also, visited, and was found to be spotlessly clean, and equipped with the latest style of range and with all the requisites for the preparation of appetising meals- In short, as will have been gathered from the description of the interior of the house, Air. Murphy lias had effected a complete and pleasing transformation, and patrons of the Empire will find every possible convenience and comfort provided. The re-furnishing has been dene by Messrs W. Strange and Co., whose Air. Bolt was given practically a free hand, and has been most successful in carrying out Air. Murphy’s ideas. The house is now lighted throughout by electricity, for the installation of which Atessrs Turnbull and Jones are responsible. The re novations, repairs, and alterations have bean effected in accordance with plans nropared by Messrs Lutterell Brothers. Visitors to Christchurch will find the Empire Hotel well appointed in all essentials, and can rely on their comfort and convenience being well looked after by Mr. Murphy, who lias had considerable experience of catering tot tne travelling public.
