A SITUATION SAVED.
WELLINGTON FIREMEN THREATEN STRIKE.
A TACTFUL MAYOR. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 11. Rumors were current to-day that the fire brigade intended to strike if their demands were not agreed to, but this possibility was averted! by a conference with a committee, who made an offer which the men accepted. The Council met in the afternoon and ratified the terms agreed on. The wages are raised to £2 for probationers, and 43s to 50s for firemen. Senior hands also get advances, and range from 52s 6d to 62s 6d. Councillors complimented the Mayor (Air T. -M. Wilford) on the tact with which he handled the situation. Arrangements had been made to utilise a volunteer brigade and fire police if the men refused to come to terms.
