ALONG THE WATERFRONT.
SLACK TIME FOR WORKERS. The present is a slack time along the Avaterfront for members of the Gisborne Waterside Workers’ Union, and inquiries yesterday elicited the information that only about 40 men AA r ere employed during the day. The membership of the union is about 150, but as the present season is never very busy a great number of the members are on halfmembership fee, and are engaged on Avork up country or at sea. The membership fee to the Union is £1 4s per year, 2s per month, and Avhile not engaged on the Avharf members may retain privileges by payment of Is per month, the payment being increased to the full amount as soon as the member resumes Avork at the Avaterfront. It is expected that the avool season Avili he in full SAving by November, Avhen there Avili he ample AA r ork for 100 men per day. Yesterday morning the s.s. KoAyliai Avas Avorking about 30 men, this being the only boat unloading, hut the Fanny and the Koutunui Avere Avaiting in the bay to lighter coal from the Lauderdale for Tokomaru. Welni' the latter vessel arrived some 40 additional men were to be employed.
