PULMONARY TUBERCULOSIS.

ABOUT 3500 SUFFERERS IN VICTORIA. During tho first fortnight of last month 349 cases of diphtheria were reported to tlie Board of Health for the whole State of Victoria, and 9 deaths. In the metropolitan area alone there were 206 cases and 5 deaths. The average of cases in tin's disease is .78 and .46 respectively. Dr. Ham, at the Board of Health meeting, read some additional health figures he had received from Mr. A. M. Laughton, Government Statist, which showed that about 3500 persons in,'Victoria were at present suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis. Analysis of the figures for the past two years show that 777 residents of the metropolitan area, and altogether 1297 in Victoria, were sufSirLng from the disease. The death’ of residents per 100,000 of the population for the State was .084 per cent, and cases reported .101 per cent. In commenting on this, Dr. Ham said it was not necessary for doctors to report cases which had already been reported in other districts. The Government Statist, in making his estimate, had probably not included cases which had been reported more than once '"' It was, indeed, curious that there were more deaths than cases reported outside the metropolitan area. This either indicated that all the cases in these outside districts were, not . reported or that sufferers were going into the country to die.
