A REMARK RESENTED
It will 'bo interesting to observe the reception ccorded to the Minister in charge of Tourist Resorts upon his next visit to Hokitika. The Department, which is the particular care of the Hon. Thos. Mackenzie, has issued a handbook, entitled, “New Zealand,” in which a description of the West Coast town concludes with a remark that the town is pervaded with “an air of hasbeen.” The member for Westland (Mr T. E. Y. Seddon) expressed the indignation of the people of Hokitika in the House the other afternoon, and provided bairn for their wounded feelings by describing the paragraph as “piffle.” “There is no air of has-been about Hokitika,” Mr Seddon declared. “It is a thriving town, the centre of mining and farm industry, and with a future before it as the centre of tourist attractions of the West Coast. If the book is given out to innocent tourists, and they swallow this stuff without going to see it again, they will get some queer ideas.”
