INTERESTING DESCRIPTION OF THE RACE.

Gisborne has made quite a reputation for itself in turning winners of important events at Grand National meetings, and further lustre was added to its record yesterday when Mr J. A. Lucas’ gelding Continuance carried off the Grand National Hurdle Race. It was a big betting race, and the Gisborne representative carried more than double the amount invested on Espartero, who in turn was more fancied than the Hawke’s Bay representative in Centaur, whose connections were very confident of winning, and made no secret of the fact. Compass had many friends, and Paisano, Whakaweira, and The Rover had their admirers. Most of the horses stripped well, looking, as they no doubt were, very well. The story of the race can he shortly told. Centaur fell before getting to the end of half a mile, and Pari tutu came down after passing the main stand. Windage followed suit at a later stage when racing prominently, and his misadventure interfered with the others. Continuance was always in front after going, half a mile, and though temporarily headed five furlongs from home, came on, and outjumping, out-staying and out-galloping Iris opponents, won really very easily by four good lengths from The Rover, who carried his impost, which included 141 b penalty, surprisingly well. . The-Native was some lengths away third, followed at short intervals by St. Aid an and Paisano, the ton weight. Continuance is by the _ Cuirassier horse Sabretache, who was: highly bred, and whose dam Roie is a sister to St. Hippo. Chibouk, the dam of Continuance, is bv Emir Bev. and of a good family, and was bred by Mr A. B. Newman,'of Gisborne. _ Mr. Lucas’ gelding lias won races previously under substantial imposts, and was trained by G. Jones, who prepared Paisano and To Aral, for their Grand National double last year, when they were ridden _ to victory by Young, who rode Coutiuuance.
