The Union Co/s Kowhai is expected to clear Wellington for Napier and Gisborne on Monday. On October 28 the new 8000-ton steamer Zealandie, which is to replace the Delphic in the London-New Zealand trade, will leave Liverpool for Wellington, via Australian ports and Auckland, on December 17, and Wellington about December 24. The Zealandic subsequently visits Lyttelton and Dunedin. Another new steamer for the same company—the Waimana, 8000 tons —also leaves Liverpool for Wellington, via Australian ports, and Auckland, on December 23. She should arrive in Auckland about February 17, and afterwards proceeds on to Lyttelton and Dunedin. An indication of the strong hold which the Germans have, on the Australian trade is furnished by the fact that the Deutsch-Australische Dampfschiffs GeselIschaft, of Hamburg, are this year adding six large steamers to their fleet for service with Australian ports. The Fremantle, the first of the new steamers to be launched, arrived at Melbourne recently, and attracted special attention. Like all other vessels of this fleet,. the Fremantle carries cargo only.
