THE TOLOGA RIDING.

PROPOSED NEW WORKS. ‘ A SUBSTANTIAL IX) AN SUGGESTED. The Cook County Council were informed yesterday that a. meeting of ratepayers was held in the Tologa riding# on August 9th, and a resolution was unanimously passed that the necessary steps be taken to raise a loan of £12,000' for the following works in the Tologa riding:— Extension, of rating area of the Tologa Bridge loan, erection of a bridge over the Pouawa .River, erection of a bridge over the Takapau River, erection of five concrete bars across Mangatoetoe River, metalling about 30 chains before reaching the hill Arakihi road, metalling Dixon’s hill, and improvements to cutting, making deviation from Puatae to Tologa through Loisels, regrading of road from Pakarae North, and metal same; regrading Panikau road forming and regrading AVaimoko road, cottage hospital, Tologa £SOO. Representations should lie made to the Hospital Board regarding the Hospital and the amount mentioned included in the loan.

A resolution Avas also unanimously passed that the Council be asked to engage Mr Keane as overseer for the Tologa Riding only, and that he be paid £3OO per year, to be deducted from rates in that riding. The proposed allocation of the lean was as follows: —Tologa Bay Bridge £3700, Takapau Bridge £6OO, Pouawa Bridge £450, new deviation to Puatae £4400, reforming Pakarae to Horehau and metalling, £550, Panikau road, reforming, £500; AVaimoko road, reforming, £3OO ; concreting crossings, Mangatoetoe river, £500; metalling and improvements, Dixon’s cutting, £300; cottage hospital, £SOO ; metalling about 30 chains before reaching the hill, Arakihi road, £2oo'. The Clerk said that the Avhcle thing Avould have to be set out for the State Advances Department, to see if they would lend the money. The Chairman thought that the ratepayers at present in the special rating area Avould not object, but those outside might. The Clerk mentioned that the matter could then be tested in the Supreme Court. Cr. Boland said that a petition some time ago had been signed by nearly everyone in the riding, and this Avas what made him think that the proposals would be acceptable to everyone. The Engineer objected to Air Keene being appointed overseer for the Tologa Riding only. He had appointed Air Keene, and he AA-as a very useful man on his (the Engineer’s) staff. Cr. Boland said that Air Keene had been in the district previous to being employed by the Council, and they thought-he was the most suitable man. It was decided to call applications for the position of overseer at a salary of £200 ; per year, and the Council decided' to take the necessary steps to see if the loan could be raised.
