Whilst the cattle yards were filled, the entry of sheep was not so large as previous sales this month. Sheep. —We yardted 340 S and sold 2520, the passed' lots consisting of breeding ewes, for which the demand was not very brisk. The sheep sale dragged considerably all through, hut fair prices for useful lines of stock were obtained. We had a fair entry of wethers, which met with, perhaps, the best- competition of any class of sheep throughout the day. Our quotations are as follows: 2-tootli wethers, culls, 7s 7d to 9s 2d; medium lines, Ids 6d', whilst well-grown 2-tooth wethers made 11s 4d to 11s 9d; 4-tooth wethers —not- many were offered and we made sales at 12s Id to 12s 9d; mixed 2-tooths, small, made 7s 4d; 2tootli ewes, culls, 7s; fair average lines, 10s 8d; 2,4, and 1 6-tooth--ewes, mixed, 10s 8d; 5-yeaf-old ewes, 86 2d; enll ewes potters, Is 9d to 2s; fat ewes, 10s to 10s 6d, for heavier weights 11s; shorn lambs, os 3d to 6s. There appeared to he several lamb buyers who could not fill tlieir demands. Cattle. —Our entry consisted of 222, of which we sold 198, under fair competition, hut prices must be quoted considerably easier on grown cattle, perhaps to the extent of 10s_ to 15s per head. There was not much demand for beef. We sold light-weight steers at £6 2s 6d; better sorts, £7 2s 6d'; whilst fat cows realised from £4 los to £4 17s 6d. Mixed calves made from 13s to 14s; mixed 15-months’ cattle, £2 18s ; IS-mohtlis’ heifers, £2 11s; dairy heifers in calf, £3 los to £4: herd cows, £2 7s 6d to £3 ss; steers. 18-months, £3 16s; 2-vear-olds, £4 ss; 24-ye.ar-olds £5 3s to £5 os.

THE FROZEN MEAT MARKET. The N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., have received the following advice from their London office, under date February 17 :—A fairly good demand has ruled for New Zealand mutton at last quotations. Large quantities of Australian continue to be offered, but, meeting a good trade, prices remain unchanged. The position of the market for lambs is very satisfactory. The demand marks a. slight improvement but it is not sufficient to cope with supplies, and in consequence stocks have further increased. Y r allies for Canterbury are unchanged, hut for North Island and l Australian prices have further declined. Abundant supplies of South American chilled beef, offering at very low prices, have materially curtailed the demand for frozen sorts, and and for the few quarters sold less money has had to be accepted. We quote : Canterbury sheep 4d! to 4id. North Island 3§d to 4£d, Australian 3d to 3£d, Canterbury lamb 51 d to sfd, North Island old to sfd, Australian 3#d to 4-id, New Zealand beef 3d. to 3-fd', off the hooks at Smitlifiekl.
