Witty) apologised for tlie absence ol Mr. H. A. King. The report and balance-sheet were presented. The balance-sheet showed a balance of £4 3s lOd. The assets ). amounted to £l4 7s Gd, and the lmr bilitios £l7 9s Gd. The club's cash deficiency was £l3 os 7d. The estimated expenditure for the year 190 S-9 amounts to £9 2s. The report stated that the telegraphic matches wore most successful and enjoyable, and through the courtesy and" ability ot • Messrs. A\. H. Eo'nner, S. Cvuuming, and F. G. Piesse, were put through without a single hitch or delay. On both occasions, Mr. 4'. J. Rowley acted as umpire. In the coming year it was hoped to have matches with Auckland, Napier, and southern places. The club sought any opportunity to entertain any lady or gentlemen visitors who wished to have a friendly hour at, the rooms. The meeting nights were fixed for Tuesdays and Saturdays, at 7.30 p.m. The ladder competition will ho conducted as heretofore. The secretary stated that iuesdav and Saturday nights had been found the most suitable. ■Air. G. E. Barton had much plea sure in moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet. In doing so, he congratulated the club on a successful year’s work. Of course, there would bo initial expenditure, which they would not require to undertake again. The club had practically held its own for the year’s work, and the thanks of the club were due to Messrs. Connell, Crawford, and Witty. He spoke appreciatively o', the pleasant evenings spent by members'during the past year and saw no reason why tilings should not go on just tho same. Air. Bull seconded the- motion, .which was carried. Air. Bull moved that the subsenp- - tion bo made 10s tins year, and that a levy of 10s be made on the active members, to place tho club in a belter financial position. This was no* to apply to new members, Mr. Blackburn seconded the motion, which was carried. The Chairman said that they had been looking forward to outside chess matches with other centres, and lasuggested that other places be written to on the matter. Tho following officers wore elected : —President, Mr. W. F. Crawford; vice-president, Air. J. YV. Witty; secrotarv and treasurer, Mr. J. AY • Witty; committee, Messrs. H. Bull, Ivissling, F. J.
