THE LATE FIRE.

[To the Editor.] Sir,—Owing to the late fire at .Messrs. Teat and Friar’s shop, the front parapet is still standing in a feeble and dangerous position, for should a strong breeze or a gale arise, the probability is that some of the pass-ers-by would get seriously hurt, if not killed, or possibly another case for .the hospital. This dangerous hanging-wall should at once be removed for the safety of pedestrians, otherwise a case of damages may rest against the persons who are responsible for tho safety of the public,’and who c-onld allay tho danger in about twenty minutes. It is to be hoped that this negligence will be attended to at once, so as to stop the cause of raanv complaints.—l am, etc., E. P. JOYCE. Gisborne, Feb. 2S.

Sir, —Will you allow me to express my warm approval of the suggestion mule by “Anonymous” in this morning’s issue of the “Times” re our showing our practical sympathy towards Air. J. G. Cox in his sad time of trouble, which has befallen him by no fault of his own-. By all means let us, one and all, do our little part in testifying in a substantial manner the esteem in which we hold Air. Cox, th in whom a more kindly, courteous, and honorable gentleman does not tread the streets of this or any other town in New Zealand. “If ’twere well done, then ’twerc well done if ’twere done quickly.” Open your lists at once, Air.
