SPORT IN AUCKLAND.

Press Association. - AUCKLAND, Sept. 28. Auckland, judging by the trophies that- have been secured by tho various' representatives, has, during the past season, attained an enviable pre-eminence in athletic pursuits, savs tho Herald. Tho Auckland Rugby representatives in 1905 secured the Ranfurly Shield, and have held it against all comers since. In Association football, which has made such great strides in Auckland, our representatives havo also proved themselves the premiers, for thev secured the Brown Shield. In hockey, too, the Aucklanders have won more representative games than the players of any other province, and are thus entitled to be" the initial holders of the New Zealand Hockey Association’s provincial shield.

Our cricket representatives were admitted by the M.C.C. team which last 'season toured tho colony to be the best they met in the Dominion, and Auckland only lost possession of the Plunket Shield by a vory few votes. It has be on decided that a party of 26 bowlers irom. Auckland shall visit New South "Wales next January at the conclusion of 'the Northern Tournament. The party will be limited to 26 players, and will travel under the auspices of tlie Auckland Provincial. Association. It is probable that a Now Zealand team of bowlers representative of the whole Dominion ~ ini’ visit Australia to-' wards the ■ end of 1908 and play a series of representative games. At the fry l annual meeting of the North Sbce Sports Protection Society, the chairman stated that the objects of the society were to foster sport in every legitimate way and to conserve its interests, in whatever manner may from time to time be deemed necessary. Ho also intimated that the sporting clubs atr. Wellington, Hawke’s Bay,, and Christchurch had affiliated with'The North Shore Society. The society’s rules, of Which there are 17, deal generally with defaulters. Itule 11 states that no person who has been declared a defaulter by the society shall be eligible to be elected a member ol any club until tlio suspension lias been removed Tho Eden District Cricket Club have again engaged A. E. Keif, the English profess icmal, as coach for the season. Tie should arrive hero just before the season opens next month. .
