CORRESPONDENCE
THE CHINESE QUESTION.
(To tlie Editor.) Sir, —Only the otlier day General I'ctha (Premier of the Transvaal) saj-d “The last Chinaman must go.” i\(HV, sir, will you kindly compare his utterance with Dr. Collins’ very shiowd and diplomatic epistle which appeared in your issue of the 24th. L’r. Collins freely admits the Chinaman to be by no means a desirable asset for this colony, but he lists no sympathy for the man who was dismissed by the Government for saying s > On the contrary, sir, I have the greatest sympathy for Mr. Lloyd ui any other Civil Servant under such circumstances, and I feel sure the people of the colony will resent with no uncertain voice the action of the Government in cruelly dismissing t]ii,s man. Sir, are the civil servants of this colony supposed to be serfs, or dumb dogs debarred almost of freedom of thought, and certainly freedom of speech, when an important atul burning question such as the above subject crops up? If such be the by-laws, then, sir, I feel sure you will agree with me it is high time tho voice of the nation should demand an amendment of such by-laws. I weli remember when men thousands strong invaded the Parliamentary Buildings in Sydney and demanded almost instant legislation from Sir Honrv Parlies —regardless of tlie British Government or any other Power —against the influx of Chinese to No- South AVales. "Why should not tn < people of this colony do the same thing, and respectively demand of 0111 weak-kneed, somersaulting Government prohibitive legislation, and make jt come to pass that “the last Chinaman must go” for tho benefit of this colony as a whole. Thanking you in anticipation,—l am. etc. P. DALLEY. Gisborne, July 24th.
