SCOW SURPRISE WRECKED.

Press Association. AUCKLAND, Yesterday. The scow Surprise is a total wreck as Ohm. The captain, mate, and two seamen are supposed to have been drowned. A fifth man got ashore. He was badly knocked about, but is expected to recover. The crew of the Surprise consisted of J. T. Gallienne (master), J. W. Jackson (aged 20), A. Stewart (19), E Johansen (19), W. Kelly (17). AUCKLAND, last night. A telegram from Tairua states that' a messenger from Oliui lias just ridden over and reported that the scow Surprise went ashore on the rocks, about a mile from the north end of Ohui beach, and is a total wreck. The captain, mate, and' two seamen are supposed to have been drowned. A fifth hand got ashore, and found his way to Ohui, where he is being well looked after my Mr. Jas. McGregor. He is badly knocked about, and rambles a little in his talk, but is expected to be well in a day or two. His name is Harry Jackson. From what can be gathered from his account, the scow dragged her anchors right from Skipper Island, and went ashore on the coast early on Sunday morning. The names of the crew on the 23rd of last month were as follows : J. T. Gallienne (skipper), who was taken on in place of K. W. Cliffe, who was sick when the vessel was last here; H. W. Jackson, aged 20, of Norfolk Island; A. Steuart, aged 19; E. Johansen, aged 19; W. Kelly, aged 17. The. last two members of the crew were signed on when tin vessel was hero last month. The above list comprised the crew at" the time she left this port.

The Surprise was recently purchased by Messrs Robb Bros., of Gisborne, to engage in tho Wlian-gerei-Gisborne coal trade. , She loft Gisborne on the 11th inst. for Tairua. Yesterday Mr, R. Robb received a telegram telling of the disaster and stating that Jackson had been saved. The vessel was insured for £650 in the New Zealand office, and Mr. Robb estimates his loss at £4OO above that amount. On this trip the Surprise was under charter to Messrs Evans,Neild and Co., who yesterday chartered another vessel for the work.
