MR WHINRAY’S REPLY.
(To the Editor Gisborne Times.) Sir,—l am due an apology to Mr Boult and any others who may put a similar construction upon my suggestion re }d rate. I merely put it os a figure of speeoh by way of illustration to show what a small i amount per head the sum requested represented of the rates collected in the county, and as the collection is intended for the general weal and advancement of the oolony generally, the most equitablo way of fioanoing out portion was through the rates annually collected, I doubt that there are many equally gonorouswith my, self will lend a hand, now that the Borough Council have committed themselves to securing e suitable space, and this was done at the request of au unanimous vote of a public meeting called to meet Mr Mclntyre, the New Zealand Commissioner of the Exhibition. I may say I have bad several very genorous offers of assietenoe without cauvassiDg as yet; and if necessity arises I have no doubt his Worship the Mayor, who like myself seldom takes no for an answer where there is anything to be done tbat should be done, will eventually secure our being represented, though it means saddling' the willing horse for the general good.—Yours, eto, J. WHINBAY, .
