The Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club's winter meeting, which was postponed out of respect to the memory of the tats Premier, was commenced to-day.. The weather wes fine, and the racing good. The sum of £7017 was put through thetoialisatore, an increase of £769 on the first day of last year. The results were : June Steeplechase—South Star 1, Luroher 2. Sleepweli and No Shot also ran. All but the winner fell. Time 5.16, div. £2 19s.
Winter Haok Handicap—Nova 1, Pan* taloon 2, Montigo 3. Also ran : Pushful, Silver Lead, Faro, Feu de joie, and Goldsmith. Won by a neok. Time 147, divs. £2 5s and £1 Bs.
