Wellington, last night. , Tho Government have decided to rei oonetruet the Native Dcpa'tment, to institute changes in the Native Land Court, including the strengthening of the personnel of the judges, and to have the Native Land Purchase Department conduced on progressive lines. Judge Edger, who has been acting j idge of tho Native Lind Court, has beeu appointed Undersecretary for Native Affairs, and will take cflbe as from June Ist next It is understood his first duty will be Iho organising of the whole of the offices dealing with Native milters. For about thirteen years past tho business of the Native Department has been carried out under three branches—tho Native Offioe (the recording department proper), Nativo Land Court, and Native Land Purchase Office. The two former have boen under tho juris d:otion of tho Department of Justice, ODd tho latter under the Lands Department. The changes in the Napier Land Court bavo not yet beon definitely deoidod on, but will be announced shortly.
