(Per Press Association.) Auokland, last night. On board tlio Government steamor Hinomoa yesterday afternoon the Consul for France presented Captain John Bollons, master of tlio vessel, with a gold modal of honor of the first-class from the French Government, to mark the rescuo cf tho crow of tho French barquo Anjou, which was shipwrecked on tho Auckland Islands. Tlio French Government has also sont out two magnificent Sevres vases for presentation to the Promier and Minister for Marine.
A reduction of about one penny per pound in the price of meat has been agreed upon by the Auckland butchere, aking effect from the first of the present month. Tho reduction may only be temporary. A woolsorter named Chas. Stokes, a recent arrival from Sydney, on his way to Christchurch to meet his children, died suddenly in Victoria hotel. An inquest will be held. The Komata Reefs mine crushed 1510 tons of ore for £2929.
Hamilton, last night
Mrs Bukowsky, aged 70, was found dead in a well near her house at Ohaupo. She had gone to draw water, and after 20 minutes was missed. A search revealed her body in the well, which was ten feet below the surface and containing ten feet of water.
Wairoa, yesterday.
Edward Henry Tennett was sentenced to two months’ hard labor, and James Jones one month’s hard labor, for stealing a cheque for £3, tho property of Rutene Tuhi. George Phillips, who tried to cash the cheque at tueir request, was discharged.
Napier, last nigh
An eight-roomed dwelling at Greenmeadows, owned and occupiod by J. Whibley, farmer, was totally destroyed by fire early this morning. The insurance on tho house is £250 in the Norwich Union, and on the furniture £l9O in the Atlas.
