Tlio Opposition mooting at Pukokolio was addressed ,by Messrs Bollard, Kirkbrido, Mander, and Bamford, after which it was resolved to form a branch of the Political Reform League, 140 names being received. The Auckland Customs returns for the financial year show the receipts to be £7-13,532, an incroaso of £10,738 on the previous year, and a record for this port.

Grojmoulh, last night. In connection with the Midland Railway, Mr Cassidy told a Star reporter that, commencing on October Ist, tho journey to Christchurch would be accomplished in one day. Passengers would leave Greymouth at 7 a.m. for Orita, and then drive to Broken river, performing the rest of the journey by train to Christchurch, where they would arrive at 10 p.m. Hokitika, la t n : ght.

The Westland Railway League has telegraphed to tho Premier and Minister for Public Works, expressing pleasure at the public intimation that tenders will be immediately called for the Summit tunnel contract of the East and West Coast railway, and congratulates the Government on the important step- about to be taken. l)r Bell, Government Geologist, interviewed, speaks very hopefully of the future in store for Westland. The geological survey of the northern district has been practically completed, and Dr Bell is very favorably impressed witn the prospects of Westland reefs. He speaks highly of the overland trip from Canterbury to South Wostland by way of Fitzgerald Pass, the route by tho Copeland Yalloy, on the western slope, being described as one of the prettiest scenic routes in tho colony. There are hot springs in the valley of considerable magnitude, forming curious yellow and reddish terraces. ■

Wellington, last night. The body of a man named Herbert Hilton Capestake, a baker by trade, was found in the harbor this morning Deceased, who was about 36 years oi age, was a- married man.

Oarnaru, last night. In the Magistrate’s Court this morning, a man named Henry Williams, with several aliases, and several previous convictions, pleaded guilty to stealing j£LO. He was remanded to the Supreme Court for stjntence. With regard to a remanded case, in which Edmond O’Donnell, licensee of the Maheno hotel, was charged with permitting drunkenness on his premises, and selling drink to an intoxicated person, the police notified that the missing witness [for the prosecution had been found. A further adjournment was granted till Saturday. The case arises out of a man named Brett being burned to death last month.
