CORPORAL PUNIBHMENT.

The question of a school teaohor’s right and discretion conoerniDg application of corporal punishment is occasionally brought before the Education Board. Complaint was received from an irate parent this morning, in whioh it was stated that in reply to a request from himself that the rod shouid not again bo applied to his daughter, as ho ooDsidered t-uoh a course of corieotion for a girl both degiaiing to her and the master, be bad reoeived back his own letter, with tbs terse comment, “ Impertinent ” written aoross u. The Board decided to ask for an ex clanatioD.
In the annual report the Chief Inspector )f Schools stated the roll number at public lohools showed for the year the unusually arge increase of 1377, and the number present at the annual visit bad increased ly 1792. Regarding the dearth of teachers he report stated that after a year or two hey might expsot a training college to uroiah steady, if not, ample supply. Tbs loarth might not, however, be assuaged mtil they employed a larger staff of pupil eachers and greatly lessened the amount if teaching required of them.
