MATCH AGAINST SURREY.

The weather was dull when Surrey resumed their first innings. The wicket was slow, and tho attendance fair. Hayward and Hobbs continued to bat in fine form, and runs cams fast despite frequent changes in the bowling. The century was hoisted a 3 the result of 95 minutes' play. Hayward, when he had made 70, was dismissed by a catch by Gebrs at long-on. He had played a splendid innings, including eight fourers. One for 127. Hobbs was 52 when he waß joined by Hayes, but the latter’s stay was brief, being disposed bf by an easy catch n the slips. Two for 137. Hobbs was next to go, also falling a victim to Trumpet, who brought off a fine left-handed catch in the slips. Just previously Hobbs had been missed by Armstrong off Cotter. Hobbs had boon at f tho wickets 2 hours 40 minutes. Three for 176. Stedman, who followed, hit off 52 in S 5 minutes,, and was then caught by Duff at long-on. Four for 230. Surrey passed the Australian total at 3.45 pm. The fifth wicket, Goatly’s, fell at 260. Holland, at 61, was easily caught by Armstrong at mid-off. He was at the wickets 110 minutes, and made many beautiful hits. Six for 294. Davis was caught at the wickets after being previously missed at mid-off by Darling. Seven for 317. Dalmeny and Nice, who were now partners, indulged in some fierce Kitting, 32 being added in five overs, and then tho former was caught by Gehrs. Eight for 349. Smith contributed a single, tho ninth wicket going at 354, The innings closed for 357, whon Cotter dismissed Nice. The Australians had lost one wioket for 29 when stumps were drawn.
