BARMAID’S BILL.
HONE HERE CHAMPIONS THE FAIR ONES.
Per Press Association. Wellington, last night.
In the Houso at 7.30 last night tho debate on the second reading of Mr Ell’s Barmaid’s Abolition Bill was resumed. Mr Hone Heko moved a hostile amend meat that it bo read a second time six months henco.
Messrs McGowan and Seddon opposed the Bill, but expressed tho opinion that the hours of barmaids should be limited.
A long debate ensued, the majority of tho speakers being against the Bill. It was urged by somo members that the proper p’.aco for legislation of this kind was in a general licensing bill. Others objected to a refleclion being cast on a respectable section of the community. BILL REJECTED BY LARGE MAJORITY.
42 VOTES TO 10.
Per Press Association. Wellington, midnight. After a lengthy debate, the motion by Mr Field to adjourn tho debate on tho Barmaids’ Abolition Bill was negatived by 40 to 10, and the motion to road tho Bill a second time six months hence was lost on tho voices.
On the motion for tho second reading tho Bill was thrown out by 42 votes to 16. Mr Field’s Dramatic Copyright Bill was then committed.
