The Frisco mail is due in Gisborne on Saturday morning. The Poverty Bay Hunt Club will meet at Rangatira to morrow morning at 11 o’clock.

The s.s. Westralia arrives lato to-mor-row, and will bo dispatched to Auckland at 9 p.m.

A first offender for drunkenness was convicted and discharged at the Police Court yesterday morning. Mr W. A. Barton, S.M., leaves for the Coast on Wednesday next, when he will hold the quarterly sittings at Tolago Bay and Port Awauui. At the Harbor Board meeting yesterday the Chairman said that a gentleman, who had been inspecting the slip, remarked that it was the best constructed work he had seen either in the colony or out of it.

Tho members of the Ivia Toa and Rangatira Hockey Clubs are requested to attend a special meeting at the Victoria Domain this afternoon at three o'clock, to elect officers for both Clubs. Miss D. C. Jones is the acting secretary. The Land Board io-day expressed satisfaction at the amount, of imirovement effected by Crown tenants n Hawke's Bay and Poverty Bay as disclosed by the Ranger's annual reports. The new chapel at Te Rau’College was consecrated by his Lordship the Bishop of Waiapu on Tuesday morning. The building, which stands on the south side of the main College building, is very neat looking within and without, and has a red tiled roof surmounted by a belfry et tho west end. A very representative congregation filled the building during the consecration service, which was conducted in the Maori language, and many afterwards partook of Holy Communion. At the conclusion of the service the students of Te Rau entertained their visitors at lunch in the grounds at the back of the College, where from an early hour cooks had been bu3y preparing food in semi-Maori style. After lunch the Rev. F. W. Chatterton and others made welcome speeches, to which some of the visitors responded. After partaking of afternoon tea the visitors dispersed. During the day a collection was taken up in aid of the building fund, and realised about -£3O.

A number of friends of Mr Andrew Morgan, second son of Mr William Morgan, met- last evening, and presented him with a silver mounted writing case prior to his departure for Christchurch. In making the presentation, Mr M. Cox referred to the high esteem in which Mr Morgan was held by iiis many friends. Mr Morgan responded feelingly, referring to the many happy days they had bpent together. He leaves by the Taluue on Sunday.

The young ladie3 of Gisborne are entering most enthusiastically into the game of hockey this season, and sotno interesting and exciting matches can bo anticipated. Both the ixia Toa and itangatira Clubs havo a very large membership, and it is expected that efforts will be made to place two second teams in the field. Every morning and afternoon the teams are out practising, all bent on getting into form for tho matches which will shortly bo held. In the present cold weather a better and more healthy pastime cannot be indulged in.

The following is reported from the bowling green Skip directing his number three : “ I wans you to come down bore.” Third player: “ I can seo it better on the other aide.” Skip : “Never mind how you see it, do as you are told ; what do you think I am hero for ?" Third player : “ Heaven knows, I do not.” Skip, getting angry : “ If you do not know you had better throw it away.” Number three plays and goes very wide. Skip changing tactics, remarks : “ Now, like a dear old fellow, come down on this and draw the shot.” Number threo does so, amidst applause, at the same time, remarking : “ Tou can lead but you cannot drive an Irishman.”

The first match of tho second round of the Hockey competition was played Wednesday afternoon on tho Victoria Domain, between City and West End Clubs. There was a fair attendance of spectators, and judging by tho applauso accorded players, future fixtures will be well patronised. The teams lined out as follows: City, white with red star, W. Dines, A. Colomau, Dclamere, C. Jarman, J. Martin (captain), B. Doyle, G. Dines, C. Clements, C. fciargisson, A. Tanner; West End, white with blue sash, Clarke, Botaka, Ixohoro, Wi Friday, L. Sherrill', Blimmer (captain), BuMmell, G. Carter, Douglas. Wepiha, and W. Harding. The game resulted in a win for City by seven pomes to five. For City Messrs Delamero, J. Martin, B. Doyle, G. Dines, Tanner, and Clements wore conspicuous. For the West Endors L. Sherrill, Blimmer, Douglas, and Wi Friday played a good game. Mr Bavitt acted as referee.
