LICENSES AT PORT CHALMERS

MAGISTRATE REFUSES APPLE CATIONS.

Per Press Association., Dunedin, last night. Mr E. H. Carew, S.M., who was recently appointed Chairman of the Port Chalmers Licensing Committee, sat as a Licensing Bench to-day, and granted a transfer of a license from one applicant to another. Application was then made for the renewal of the license for the Provincial Hotel. Mr Carew said that the returning officer had reported to him that prohibition had been carried in the district. That being so, he could not entertain the application I for a license. Mr Platts recounted the steps taken in connection with the petition and decision of the Appeal Court. He

said the application had been made to take the matter to the Privy Council, aud as that application was pending, the whole matter was in a state of suspense. It was the proper thing, looking at the interest of the parties and convenience of the public, that the Committee at its discretion should adjourn the meeting till the matter was decided. Mr Carew said he had decided to decline to deal with any application, and that placed Mr Platts in a better position than if he had dealt with it, as he could apply for mandamus. After a few remarks from Mr A. S. Adams, Mr Carew said the meeting was closed.
