ADVANCE WINS THE CUP.

The opening day of the Wellington Racing Club’s Summer Meeting was a great success. There was glorious weather and a record attendance, about 7000, including visitors from all parts of the colony. Speculation was brisk, £18,937 going through the machines, against .£9043 for the corresponding day of 1901, and this despite a large number of bookmakers, who appeared to drivo a good businoss. The results were :

Anniversary Handicap. Windwhistlo 1, Livonia 2, Menura 3. All started but Torowai. Good race, won by half a length. Time 1.42 1-5, divs. £5 12s Gd and £G 3s.

Ruupehu Hack Handicap,—Narcotic 1, Good Intent 2, Waikanae 3. Lavalette, Clovelly, Opaeao, and Apprentice wore scratched. A good race, won by a long neck. Timo 1.16 8-5, divs. £9 Is and £1 16s.

Wellington Cup, It miles,

Advance ... ... ••• 1 Hinetaura 2 Cannie Chiel ... ... , ... 3 All started. Advance, who was a hot favorite, camo through tho field a quartermile from home, and won with great ease by two lengths. Time 2.341, a record for tho colony. Divs., £2 9s and £2 7s 6d. Electric Handicap.—Petrovna 1, Turepo 2, Dohoro 3. Scratchsd : Ostiak, Westguard, Rod Gauntlet, Ayrdale. A good race, won by a quarter of a length. Time 1.1, divs. £6 8s 6d and £3 11s.
