The Harbor Board has received word that the Government will pay Mr Napier Bell’s expenses, amounting to £6O, for the inspection of the river works. NAPIER, last night. Recently tile Harbor Board decided lo extend the breakwater fifty feet. The result lias been so beneficial in reducing the range that the _ Board yesterday resolved on a further extension of fifty feet. The statement of last year’s operations of the Board is considered highly satisfactory, showing a reduction of the debit balance bv £5383.

A curious fact in connection with the affair is that there are no signs of the premises having, been broken into, and the occupant is understood to have locked Ihe doors, which were fitted with patent, locks which could not be picked. At Hie inquest regarding the Fortrose boating fatality, by which two men were drowned, the evidence showed that the men were crossing the river when a strong current took possession of the boat, carrying them over the bar and swamping them in the breakers. A verdict was returned accordingly. Perfect summer weather is now being experienced, and the crops are benefit ting immensely.
