ENGLISHMEN V. WELLINGTON, another easy win for ENGLISHMEN. By Tolograph—Press Association. Wellington, last night. Though rain foil in tho night, it did not materially injure tho wicket excopt at ono ond, whero it crumbled a littlo, and aftor the Englishmen were disposed of for 289 the Wellington players were expected, after their batting on Thursday, to make a draw of it. They began fairly well, with four wickots down for 81, but after iunch Thompson found a “ spot," and whenever ho hit it it seemed to take a wicket. Mahoney played a capital innings, but could find no ono to stay with him, and all wore out for 140, leaving tho Englishmen only 95 to get, with 2§ hours to go. These runs were hit off by Warner and Burnup. first over, however, tho latter should havo been caught with hie total at 17, but was badly missed, and though Warner gave a possible chance, which was lost by Mahoney slipping, nothing olse could bo urged against them. Burnup played a masterful innings and did some hard, cloan hitting, two of his drives landing over tho ropos for six each.

In England’s first innings Thompson carried his bat for 48, which with his bowling to-day was well up to his reputation of a sound all-round player. In the second innings Warnor was not out for dll, and Burnup not out for 50; extras 4, making 97, or two moro -than required. For Wellington Mahoney was top scorer, with 40 (not out), Gore 20, Hickson 20, Richardson 19. Tho best bowling by Wellington was Upham four for 57. Against Wellington Thompson took 7 for 51, Hargreaves 1 for 40, and Bosanquot 1 for 24. Tho weather was fine, and tboro was another largo gate, tho total attendance being a record. The takings amount to some JE6SO, which is expected to givo a profit of over DBOO to the local Association.

Jon. 24.—United v. County Jan. 81.—West End v. United Feb. 7. —County v. West End All the above matches will bo played on Victoria Domain.

Poverty Bay is to rceoive a visit shortly from a thoroughly representative East Coast team, which will play a series of matches here, and will then in all probability go on to Napier and engage tho Clubs thero. Cricket is in a flourishing state on tho Coast this soason, and tho toarn, which will bo solected from tho Waipiro, Mata, Tokotunru, Tuparoa, aad Tolago Clubs, is certain to be a strong one in all dopartinonts of the game. It bohoves local players to got themselves into their very best form before the powerful Coast combination pomes down upon them. The local Association intends to instruct its selection committee to inolude only those players in the representative team who practise regularly. The public are certain to soo some play worth watching while the East Coast representatives are with us.

J. M. Hussey, tho well-known orstwhile Gisbormte, is in fine form this season, and on Saturday week played a fine innings in Dunedin of 60, not out, for Carisbrook A. against Dunodin No. 1. He is considered a certainty for a placo in tho Otago team against the Englishmen.
