Colo. 1 Glorious weather prevailed for the inaugural meeting in connection with the Poverty iiay Schools’ Amateur Athletic Association, which took place at the Park 1 Company’s pretty grounds yesterday under ’ tho most favorable circumstances. There . was a large attendance of pupils and their 1 friends, and tho outing was in overy ! respect a most enjoyable one. The arrangements mado for tho meeting re--1 llccted tho utmost credit upon the Committee, and a word of praise is especially duo to tho Secretary, Mr R. Cole, for tho indofatigablo manner in which ho workod to make tho day a success. Mr Cole had a groat deal of assistance from tho teachers , of tho Gisborne and country schools, all of whom did their utmost to muko things run smoothly. Tho train arrangements were well conducted, and large crowds of pupils ‘ and adults arrived from town and country. The programme was commenced at 11 o’clock, and the events woro kept well up ‘ to tirno, chiefly through tho untiring efforts of tho Marshalls, Messrs Wauchop, 1 Sefton, and Crawford, in getting tho f competitors to tho mark. The competi- j tions wero chiofly restricted to tho Gis- ( borno school, with the exception of some J entries from To Karaka and Matawhero. £ However, it is hoped that noxt year tho “ country schools will roll up bettor, and * that competition will bo much keener. a Tho City Band was in attendance, and v discoursed many familiar airs which 1 tended to enlivou tho proceedings. 8 Mrs Erskino is worthy of unlimited 0 praiso for her oxcollont eatoring arrangements. 6 Tho chief feature of the day was tho diaplay of physical oxorcises by squads from u tho town and country schools. When one n comes to consider that a month ago tho e majority of tho children had never been 81 drilled with clubs, dumb-bells, or wands, a tho surpriso is that in so short a time such “ excellent work could bo produced. Too u high praiso cannot bo given to tho untir- “ ing offorts of tho teachers who havo dur- J 5 iug the last few weeks trained their pupils “ in this form of bodily recreation. A spocial work of praise is due to thoso country a toaehors who woro enthusiastic and b, energetic onough to take in hand this por- A tion of tho day’s competition. “ Tho following were tho competitors in ° tho dumb-bell exorcises :To Karaka School V (blue with white sash), No. 1 Gisborne School (blue and maroon), No. 2 Gisborne School (bluo and maroon). Tho drill was well done in overy rospeot, and gained loud applauso from tho spectators. Tho No. 2 Gisborno School woro tho first to porfortn, and reflect groat oredit on their teacher, Mr Quigley. No. 2 Gisborne School wero Bocond to como forward, and showed very good form considering that tho squad was principally composed of C juveniles, and that their teacher, Mr pi Wells, was absent. Tho boys wero com- la mandod by Master Bloomfield, who seems ci an enterprising young lad, and fully com- pi prehended tho routine of his duties. Mr fi Sefton’s squad then followed, and wero in si the best of form, being very quick in tlioir iu movements and fully understanding their dutios. Tho squad kept perfect time, and Mr Sefton must have felt proud of his boys who went at their work with groat onthusiasm. A number of pupils rode over 25 miles to tako part p> in tho competition, which resulted as tt | follows (out of q possiblo 30 points):— w To Karaka school 26 points, No. 1 Gisborno school 15 points, No. 2 Gisborne jy school 21 points: Judging by tho close a. scoring tho wand drill competition was a sc good event. Tho competitors wero the cc Gisborne District High School girls v. U j boys, and Miss Adams and Mr Wauchop g are to bo complimented for their careful rl training of tho pupils. The Bcoreß were : g Boys ly points, girls 18 points. The squad gj drill was an attractive item, tho No. 2 f c Gisborne District High School, under Mr w Driller, and the Matawhero cadets, under a ] Mr Marshall, competing. Tho latter (j school won by two points. A magnificent g display of Indian club drill was given by a e , company of girls from the Gisborne school 0 , in charge of Miss Lewis, who must have been untiring in her efforts in training the g pupils to the perfection which they dia- p playod. Mr McClure, of Waorenga-a- p hika, also presented a numbor of pupils y for club drill, prettily attirod in red, white p and bluo costumes. The company was p woll trained, and gavo many attractive p exercises, the marching being a special j feature of tho display. A vory attractive p exhibition of Swedish drill was given by a p company of girls trained by Miss Faram, p and received rounds of applause. The 100yds and 440yds Championships for boys were koonly contested, and were carried off by Bruoe Muir, who ran in good style. Tho 100yds Handicap for amateurs was a good race, aud was won by G. Nolan (5 yds) after a hard fought battle. Tho 440yds Flat Race proved a good race, and was woll contested by Shaw j and Hansen, tho latter winning by a j couple of yards. y In tho One Milo Flat only Hansen, ( Shaw, and Roderick started. All got well q away, and took things easy for tho first ( lap, after which Hanson rallied forth, and j was in tho load at the end of the second ( lap. Roderick, who had been running j steadily, hold second place, with Shaw j falling back in the roar until tho last lap, ( when ho spurted, and mado a good bid for victory, but Hansen proved too good. The Obstaclo ltaco caused much fun, and was heartily enjoyed by tho boys. Messrs A. W. Rees, A. F. Kennedy, R. N. Jones, J. W. Nolan, J. H. Coleburn, aud Rev. H. Williams officiated as judges.
