A STONEWALL.

We are not surprised that some members in the House strongly resisted the payment of the large sum of .£150,000 to tho Midland Kailway debenture-holders after the company has failed in every attempt by legal means to obtain redress. These members apparently thought that the company was entitled to any consideration, and therefore did to kill tho measure. There are otners, however, who look upon the matter in a very' different light, and who firmly' believe that common honesty requires the colony to acknowledge its liability and to pay the debenture-holders and shareholders of the company. There arc not a few who question whether were it not for the great and pressing necessity for the colony to rehabilitate itself before it goes on the London market for another loan, this Midland Railway vote would ever have seen daylight in the House. The Government have evidently realised that it is a matter of life and death with them ; that their credit is so impaired in this matter that it ia necessary for them to pay the anwunt stated before they could safely

proceed with further loans. It is to be hoped that the amende now made will not be too late. The Te Karaka Cricket Club opens their season on Saturday next. Mr L. The Gisborne Rifles Band have been fortunate in securing the services of Miss Williams, of Napier, to sing at their Grand Military Concert on Monday next. The rehearsal on Thursday afternoon of the performers was very successful, the various items being rendered in a manner tuat left nothing to bo desired. The programme is a lengthy and good one, and should please the public taste. Tickets are selling rapidly, and those who have not obtained them should do so at once. The football match, Banks and Law v. Merchants aud Insurance, arranged for to morrow on tho Victoria Domain, is causing a great amount of interest, and judging by vvhut one hears from the enthusiasts and barrackers of the opposing teams, there is likely to bo a keen contest. It is said that some of tho “ old timers ” have been undergoing a severe preparation to como to tho post lit and well to do battlo for their side, whilst the younger players are only too aux-ous to get to work on somo of the “ old have-beens.” From what we gather, the teams are as evenly matched as ouc can wish, aud several well-known old sprinters will oueo more be brought to light. A small charge will be made at tho gato, aud the proceeds will be devoted to the funds for tho Town Clock. The teams will be published tomorrow.
