FOLK SONGS SUNG IN MINE
IN A UNITED STATES MINE, half a mile below the surface of the earth, Albert Morgan (left) and Jerry Byrne (right) sing a folk song during a recording session supervised by George Korsop, folk-song collector (centre). Mr. Korson visited the mine with a portable electric recording machine to get authentic reproductions of the songs that once were an Important part of the miners’ social life. The recordings are preserved In the Archive of American Folk Song, a division of the U.S, Government’s Library of Congress. More than 40,000 pieces of music from all over the country are * included in the collection.
