TRAFFIC CENSUS IN AUGUST AND JANUARY
(P.A.) WELLINGTON. July 24,1 The first traffic census since 1938 will be held from August 25 to August 31 of this year and from January 25 to January 31 next year, said the Minister of Works, Mr. W. S. Goosman. today. The Minister added that with up-to-date statistics for the volume and type of traffic on highways in winter and summer the Main Highways Board would be assisted in formulating its policy and the information wouid also be a factor in Ihe priority demands and standards of particular highways. The board considered that the traffic census should not be delayed and to give reasonable coverage to all the more important routes some 500 tally stations would be required. On a small proportion of points a continuous tally would be taken. One of the features of the forthcoming traffic census, said the Minister, would be the taking of more detail of various classes of heavy motor-vehicles.
