Time Record Set By Gisborne Borough Council

A record, said by one councillor to be an all-time one. was established at the fortnightly meeting of the Gisborne Borough Council last night when 30 minutes were sufficient to dispose of Hie agenda. The full open meeting of the council was completed by 8 p.m., members assembling at 7.30 p.m. after the finance committee had met a little earlier in the evening. The order paper was a light one. probably due to the meeting of the council Hie previous Tuesday. This was made necessary when the previous fortnightly meeting lapsed for want of a quorum. The Mayor. Mr. N. H. Bull, presided. Other members in attendance were Messrs. G. J Jcunc. T. A. Tam’ney. W. C. Kojin, H. R. Chrisn, F. Tolerlon, I. J. Ouiglcy, J. H. Hall and Dr. A. L. Singer.

Of 17 building permits granted by the council during the past fortnight. 12 were for dwellings vaued at £28.868. Three were for alterations and additions to dwellings estimated to cost £706. one for a shed costing £IOO. and the remainder for a mortuary valued at £4OOO The total value of all the Demits was £33.734. Consumption of water increased by 220,000 gallons for the week ended July 18. when the meter reading was 8.740.000 gallons, against 8,520.000 gallons the previous ycek. Scouring of the mains was continuing and accounted for the comparatively high consumption, stated the town clerk, Mr. \V. M. Jenkins. One leak was repaired in the main pipeline above Waingake.

An increase was noted in the council's motor bus returns. For Hie fortnignt ended July 21 the revenue amounted to £606 Gs Id, compared with £SBB 10s 7d the previous fortnight. AUCKLAND SUPREME COURT.—The total of 17 indictments against 25 persons before the present session of the Supreme Court in Auckland was substantially less than usual, said Mr. Justice Callan when the session opened yesterday. "It seems to me that I should tell you that some of the charges arise from grave crimes and some of tho trials may be lengthy.” His Honour stated. Two men were charged with murder, and a woman with manslaughter. Two indictments alleged negligent driving causing injury. or with failing to stop after on accident. There was one indictment of rape, one of attempted rape involving a number of persons, one of armed assault with intent to rob, and one of assault, causing actual bodily harm.—P.A.
