AUCKLAND STARTS “GO-SLOW” WITH COMPANY’S SHIPS

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, July 25. “Go-slow'' methods in the handling of cargo for all vessels of the New Zealand Shipping Company, against which they considered they had a grievance, was put into operation by Auckland watersiders today. This is reported to be part of the national policy. Reduction in the rate of handling became evident immediately after a special stop-work meeting held this morning. Ships of other companies were not affected. It is understood that the watersiders will'not work cargo for New Zealand Shipping Company vessels. either loading or discharging, beyond the minimum rates fixed in the agreement. Many of this company’s ships carry large refrigerated cargoes. The average loading rate, for instance. of butter is 850 boxes hourly. This will drop to the minimum of 550. Watersiders going slow will forego the bonus payments for handling cargo on these vessels. Payments from file bonus pool at Auckland in the last quarter amounted to 2Jd an hour.

The Waterside Workers Union intends to reopen with the Waterfront Industry Authority claims for margin payment for skill and it is understood a fixture for this will be sought next week when the question of meal money will also be recommitted.
