In the Fourteenth Century, Chipping Campdcn was a bustling centre of the English wool trade. Here reigned William Grevel, the greatest wool merchant of his time, with trade connections extending over half Europe, and the progenitor of a long line of Earls of Warwick. Gravel's house, which is illustrated above, is still in existence and with the ancient wool market, the wool stapler’s hall and a ‘ wool ’ church gives us a glimpse of the town’s historic association with the wool trade. The glories of Chipping Campdcn as a wool centre have long since departed for as English sheep became acclimatized to other lands so the wool trade and woollen industry followed the sheep.
