S.A. SENATE PASSES “BAN-REDS” BILL ON CASTING VOTE

(10 a.m.) CAPE TOWN, June 23. The South African Senate today adopted the Suppression of Communism Bill at the third reading on the casting vote of the president. Opposition amendments were rejected in a series of divisions by 19 votes to 18.

The South African Communist Party announced its dissolution on June 20 as the Assembly passed the bill and sent it to the Senate.

The bill provides a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisoment and empowers the Governor-General, by proclamation, to outlaw any organisation which professed on or after May 5. 1950, to propagate the principles of communism.
