COASTER TOA GOES AGROUND ON BAR OFF WHAKATANE

(P.A.)

AUCKLAND, May 26,

The Northern Steamship Company's 220-ton coaster Toa went aground entering Whakatane Harbour shortly after noon yesterday. Efforts to refloat her yesterday failed and it was planned last evening to make further attempts with the aid of the coaster Kapiti on her arrival this afternoon. The Toa is commanded by Captain J. Appleton, of Auckland. The Toa was being towed into harbour behind a Whakatane Harbour Board launch on the full tide. Turning above the bar the vessel yawled slightly. She touched bottom and swung broadside on to the shore. She then drifted about 150 yards before coming to rest on the bottom. The weather was fine at the time with a light north-easterly blowing. The crew remained tm board the Toa. She is carrying a cargo of paperpulp for the Whakatane board mills.
