Removal Of Some Aspects Of Import Control Expected

(P.A ) AUCKLAND, March 31. “From our conversation with the Minister of Customs, Mr. C. M. Bowden it appears he is taking a realistic attitude and the next issue of licenses will be on the basis of providing greater facilities for future plans and the removal of some of the aspects of import control which have created frustration and delay,” said the president of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation, Mr. S. Howard Hunter, yesterday.

Earlier in the week, with members of the federation’s executive, he met Mr. Bowden and discussed import licenses and the proposed revision of the procedure concerning import control.

Manufacturers were encouraged by Mr. Bowden’s assurance that an early announcement could be expected, said Mr Hunter. It was obvious that protection for the development of economic New Zealand industries would continue to be the Government’s policy, and there was little evidence to support a suggestion that the time had come when sterling balances had reached the point where New Zealand could buy without restriction.

“Mr. Bowden again emphasised that the issue of licenses would be finalised by July and we’ve every reason to believe this will be an accomplished fact,” said Mr. Hunter.
