Regent.—“ Sons of Matthew,” now at the Regent Theatre, is one of the more solid achievements in picture making in Australia. The picture will hold the attention of audiences. Young settlers, sons of pioneer Matthew O’Riordan, four hefty young fellows, on their father’s advrec, take up a block of primitive country on a remote Queensland plateau, and transform it into a modern farm. Each of the characters becomes strongly individualised as the film proceeds, until one almost shares the O’Riordan’a troubles. Scenically, too, the picture is a triumph. Majestic.—There is a double attraction today with the sparkling musical comedy “Isn't It Romantic?” at the head of the bill. The fun is taken care of by Veronica Lake, Mona Freeman and Mary Hatcher. The story involves Mary’s efforts to marry Richard Webb; Veronica's trouble is to avoid the persistent Billy de Wolfe, while Mona’s chief care is to keep both her sisters plus her father, ju* of trouble. Billy de Wolfe is ns funny as he was in “Dear Ruth” and "Blue Skies.” The second feature is “Law of the Canyon.”
Kings.—The now Ealing Studios* production, “Kind Hearts and Coronets,” is a gay, extravagant murder-comedy. It tells the story of an _ embittered young man who decides to kill eight relatives in order to inherit a dukedom. One by one the victims are liquidated, and the charming murderer marries the lovely widow of one of them. In the end ho is brought to trial for a murder. Which one? Well you must go and find out. Denis Price, Valerie Hobson and Joan Greenwood give excellent performances and Alec Guinness brilliantly plays eight parts—a unique achievement.
