DRIVER KILLED IN LEAP FROM CRASH OF RUN-AWAY TRUCK
(P.A.) WHANG AREI. March 20. The driver of a timber truck was killed on the Brvnderwyn deviation on flic main Whangarei-Auckland highway on Friday night. He was: Mr. Joseph Atkinson Martin, aged 39, married, with two children, of Grey Street, Onehunga. Mr. Martin was driving a heavy truck loaded with sawn timber from Auckland to Whangarei. Travelling down a steep slope of about 4j miles from Waipu the truck apparently got out of control. Parts of the truck, scattered over more than a mile, led to the belief that some of the machinery, probably the engine had disintegrated and the vehicle careered on until it struck a bank. The truck, to which was attached a heavy trailer, capsized back on to the road. Apparently Mr. Martin, the only occupant, tried to jump clear and was thrown from the truck and caught in a chain. His body, wrapped in the chain, was found in scrub 30 yards from where the remains of the truck lay.
