Sixty Thousand U.S. Miners Refuse Work Pending New Contract

(11 a.m.) NEW YORK,, Jan. 16. About 60,000 soft coal miners in six States refused to obey Mr. John Lewis’ suggestion that they return to work today. Western Pennsylvania led the walk-out with 45,000 miners idle out of 56.000, but West Virginia, the nation’s largest soft coal producing State, had onlv 2500 out of 110.000 idle. ■ Mr. Lewis last week suggested* that the men return to a three-dav work week, pending the negotiation of a new contract, but they declared that they would not resume until the contract was negotiated.
