MR. A. G. SKIPWORTH

One of the Gisborne district’s oldest identities Mr. Alfred Grey Skipworth, passed away on Sunday at the age of 85 years.

Born at Makaraka. he was two years of age ai the time when the Maori wars caused disruption in the settlement, and with his parents he escaped down the river in a canoe

Mr. Skioworth’s uncle. Mr. Thomas U’Ren. was the first white baby boy to be born in the Gisborne district. In iiis youth. Mr. Skipworth was a keen rinks skater, and was a judge in this sport for many years. He was known also for his considerable gym nastic ability.

Mr. Skipworth’s wife pre-deceased him by nine years, but he is survived bv four sisters. Mesdames W. Arthur and F. Calcott, Gisborne, and Mesdames E Roods and J Lewis, Auckland. He leaves also one daughter, Mrs. C. Brady, Gisborne, a stepdaughter, Mrs. P. Liddell three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
