WIDE CHOICE IN AVERAGE FIELDS AT WAVERLEY

(Heiald Special Service.) FOR the Labour Day race

meeting at Waverley average fields in size and quality have made the final payments. This meeting as a rule is confined to horses trained on the other coast and there will be very few competing from elsewhere on Monday. There is a fair amount of recent form offering in the majority of the races. ★WAVERLEY & SYMES CUP The chief event, the Waverley Cup, has drawn a field of 15 and with at least a dozen possibilities fancies may take in a large range and even the favourite should be at fair odds.

MISS BAIRNSFATHER ran a good second at Waipukurau over seven furlongs and with an apprentice allowance will have to be seriously considered. KIA ORA KATOA failed to stay the distance in the Central H.B. Cup the other week so his connections may prefer the open sprint. NGAKOTI will have to' be given a good show, too, as he has been galloping well at Awapuni. Mercian Lad is passed over in favour of Mr. Pym, who of late has been racing prominently and who beat a good field at Wanganui last month. Lord Holland is another that has raced up to his best form this last few months, while Mission will need to improve only a little to be dangerous. Parlous, who seems a dangerous lightweight, is reported to have freshened up again. Playtos has shown his best over a shorter course than this distance, 10 furlongs. Silver Pal is a lightweight possibility, more especially if it is wet and it generally is that way on Labour Day. Sauare Dink, if back to the form he showed the season before last, would look a “sitter” on the minimum. ★BREWER MEMORIAL HOP.

KIA ORA KATOA heads the list in the Brewer Memorial, run over six furlongs and if recent racing has not taken the edge off his condition he should be hard to beat. TENOR ROYAL is a possibility, but is best over a longer course. THE MISSIONER ran a fair fourth at Hastings earlier this month and must be fast approaching winning form again. CHAMPAGNE has shown a lot of speed and has also prevailed in stronger company than she is to meet on Monday. PAYTOS appeals more here than in the Cup, while EASTERN CHARM is the type that might surprise. SIR ROYAL is preferred to MALLOW. on the same mark, and if it is wet DALLAS will have to be considered. Those lower in the handicap do not make a strong appeal. THE MINOR EVENTS

The minor races include two events run under maiden conditions, a hurdle race, and three hack races, the chief of which is the Hack Cup, run over a mile and a quarter. In this event Waimanu. who heads the list, is a recent winner. Chief Officer was second in his last effort.. while General Hope appeals a little more than Horouta, who. however, is improving, according to Wanganui track reports. Diplomacy won a novice event a couple of weeks back. Royal Drake enjoys a private reputation and is considered to be due any day now. The Pro was second at Waipukurau and on that run should take an interesting part in this event. Already, Fearless Gain and Barlous might appeal most among the others.
