FELLOWS OF ROYAL SOCIETY.— The election of the following fellows of the Royal Society of New Zealand at the annual meeting of the council in May were gazetted in Wellington on Thursday: Messrs. R. O. Page. J. T. Salmon, G. Simpson and F. G. Soper.
AUSTRALIANS EXPECTED AT ROYAL SHOW.—Twenty Australians (13 men and seven women) are expected in New Zealand as a party early in November, according to advice received by the office of the Australian High Commissioner. One of the objects of the visit will be to attend the Royal Show at Palmerston North that month. It is also profiosed that a party of 40 New Zeaanders under the auspices of Federated Farmers will visit New South Wales at Easter, 1950, and inspect the Royal Show in Sydney.
X-RAY STUDENTS.—If the present plans for salary scales under the British national health scheme go through, young New Zealanders studying X-ray in England are unlikely to come back to the Dominion. Dr. E. P. Allen, a New Plymouth radiologist, expressed this opinion when he returned after studying radiology in England, Scotland, and Seandanavia. Dr. Allen said that at least nine New Zealanders are on courses or have just finished them. He added: “Once a person has been accepted as a specialist, conditions in Britain are very favourable and the cost of living is no. higher than in New Zealand.”
